Simple Delights

{Sweet mail}

I can never turn down any chocolate, especially when it comes packaged as beautifully as this. Almost too pretty to open.

{Wrapping up something special to brighten up someone's day.}

{A quiet moment enjoying afternoon tea sweetened with herb-infused honey.}

{The tiniest, prettiest perfume bottle my mother gave me when I was a little girl.}

I was recently reunited with it the last time I went back to Lithuania. The biggest surprise was to discover that it still held perfume I used back in high school - Violet by Avon. It's a time capsule in a bottle.

{These peachy-soft cheeks and that adorable, heart-melting pout of our sweet nephew Jamie Bingham - quite possibly the cutest baby that ever lived.}

Sisters in the City

A couple of months ago we had a very special guest staying with us - my sister Edita. I dreamt for years about the day when my family would be able to come visit me on the other side of the globe. Well, it finally happened, and my sister was the first member to do it. She was here for two brief weeks. Two weeks I needed so desperately and will always remember. My sister was only 15 when I moved to the U.S.. Living so far away for so many years (many of them before Skype) took a toll on our relationship. I longed for those heart to heart conversations or laughing uncontrollably from our own silliness, like we used to growing up. In the past couple of years, each time I go back to Lithuania, I've been trying to regain that closeness we once had. Each time I hoped I could break through the emotional walls that were built up after leaving my childhood home. The two weeks we had in the country I now call home were a major breakthrough for our relationship. I finally saw a crack in those walls, and laughter and silliness broke through. It's the closest I've felt to my sister in a very long time, and it feels incredibly comforting.

We spent our first week together sightseeing the popular tourist attractions in Chicago. We took a stroll though Millennium Park; snapped the obligatory picture of "The Bean"; tested my fear of heights on the Ferris wheel at Navy Pier; checked out the sea life at the Shedd Aquarium (after almost freezing to death in the mile long check-in line outside); walked along the River Walk while admiring Chicago architecture; and of course a visit to the Windy City wouldn't be complete without seeing it's spectacular panorama at the famous Sears (Willis) Tower. It was fun be a tourist in our own city for a couple days; to revisit some of the places we haven't been to in long time. It made us appreciate all that Chicago has to offer and fall in love with it a little bit more.

{Look up!}

{I love you so!}

{Frozen, disheveled, but happy}

{A fuzzball!}

{Chicago style hot dogs, preferably served with a healthy serving of Chicago wind gusts.}

{Even after 14 years this view never gets old.}
